Strand7 R3

Welcome to Strand7 R3, a major new Strand7 release that will greatly improve the way you interact with Strand7 models. Strand7 R3 features a redesigned graphical user interface (GUI) which, together with its new high-performance graphics engine, built on DirectX, provides a decidedly better working environment for your finite element analysis. The new 64-bit architecture in Strand7 R3 significantly reduces solve times for large models. It also makes it possible to build and solve much larger models than ever before.

Three main features of Strand7 R3

New interface

The main toolbar is no longer detached from the model window. The Strand7 model window now comprises a single compact window with a series of main tabs, each with its own toolbars and in some cases a set of sub-tabs. The new tabbed arrangement requires fewer clicks to navigate from one place to another; for example, switching solver types can be achieved with a single click under the SOLVERS tab. It also allows very quick movement from one data view to another, for example from the VISUAL view to the TEXT view, or to completely different sets of data within a model, for example from LAYOUTS/Tables to the LISTINGS view.

Some of the keyboard sequences have also changed to achieve certain new functionality. These are illustrated in the relevant parts of this document.

DirectX graphics

With the new DirectX graphics, the rendering performance in Strand7 R3 is limited mainly by the capabilities of the graphics card. Large Strand7 models can now be handled effortlessly and rendering performance can be increased by upgrading the graphics card. Strand7 R3 requires Direct X Version 11 (DX11), Feature Level 11.1 or above.

64-bit architecture

A 32-bit application under Windows can allocate and access at most 3 GB RAM, with the largest contiguous block limited to 2 GB, if it is available. As a 64-bit application, Strand7 R3 can access a practically unlimited amount of RAM – as much as is installed on your system. In addition, file sizes are no longer limited to 32 GB, therefore it is possible to solve much larger models.
