Heat of Hydration


Introduction

Soon after casting, mass concrete structures go through a hydration period generating significant internal heat and a

corresponding increase in temperatures. Any differential expansion that accompanies this temperature rise leads to

internal thermal stressing that, in turn, may cause undesirable cracking. It is therefore important to perform a transient

heat analysis to determine the evolution of temperatures in hydrating concrete. As concrete structures are cast in stages,

a construction sequence must be incorporated into the heat of hydration analysis.


Problem

This example models a foundation structure consisting of subsoil mass and two parts of mass

concrete cast in two stages. 

The 2nd pour takes place after 170 hours of casting the 1st pour.

A quarter model heat of hydration analysis is required for the duration of time up to 930 hours

after the casting of the 2nd concrete mass in order to determine:

• The temperature history within the 1st concrete mass

• The temperature history at the interface between the two concrete parts
